The Hamptons International Film Festival announces Spotlight, Competition and World Cinema Films with highlights. The Festival continues a wide range of programs including Films of Conflict & Resolution, Pitch In for Social Documentaries-in-Progress, Views from Long Island, A Conversation With, Rowdy Talks and many additional programs celebrating their 20th year.

HIFF is proud to announce its Spotlight Films, the World Cinema Section and the films in this year’s Golden Starfish Award Competitions. In this celebratory 20th year the Festival is proud to present a dynamic and diverse group of films, filmmakers, industry and talent that will come to the Hamptons for this festival milestone. The 2012 Festival runs from Thursday, October 4th through Monday October 8th in East Hampton with additional venues in Southampton, Sag Harbor, West Hampton and Montauk. Festival headquarters are located at the beautiful c/o The Maidstone Hotel on Main Street in East Hampton.

Continuing, “From our first edition, up until today, we have remained committed to the goal of entertaining, enlightening and sometimes challenging the audiences whose appetite for great cinema remains as strong as ever,” says Director of Programing David Nugent. “From the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes to our 22 World Premieres, to the film that just won that Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival a few days ago, the audiences in The Hamptons will once again sample what we feel are the best films from around the world.”


The heart of the Hamptons International Film Festival is its Golden Starfish Awards and the films in the Competition for Best Narrative Feature (over $125,000 in goods and in-kind services), Best Documentary Feature ($3,000 in cash) and Best Short Film ($1,000 in cash). Jury participants include filmmakers Chris Hegedus, Susan Lacy, and Rachael Horovitz; New York Film Critic Circle members Thelma Adams and Joshua Rothkopf; and actress/filmmaker Trudie Styler.


This year’s Golden Starfish Award competition films in the Narrative category are THE ALMOST MAN, directed by Martin Lund; DEAD MAN’S BURDEN, directed by Jared Moshé; LA DEMORA, directed by Rodrigo Plá; KUMA, directed by Umut Dag; and LORE, directed by Cate Shortland. The Golden Starfish Award competition films for Documentary are BAY OF ALL SAINTS, directed by Annie Eastman; COLOMBIANOS, directed by Tora Mårtens; EL HUASO, directed by Carlo Guillermo Proto; JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET, directed by Jesse Vile, and RISING FROM ASHES, directed by T.C Johnstone. The Golden Starfish Award competition films for Short Film are ABIGAIL, directed by Matthew James Reilly; BYDLO, directed by Patrick Bouchard; DANCE MUSIC NOW, directed by Johan Jonason; THE RETURN, directed by Blerta Zeqiri; and THE CURSE, directed by Fyzal Boulifa.


As previously announced, the Festival’s Opening Night Film on Thursday, October 4th is the U.S. premiere of Liz Garbus’ LOVE, MARILYN; the October 6th Centerpiece Film is Ben Affleck’s ARGO; and the Closing Night Film is David Chase’s NOT FADE AWAY, which will screen on Sunday, October 7. The Festival’s Southampton venue will kick off on October 5th with SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, which won this year’s audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival.


Other Spotlight films in the 2012 Festival include FRANKENWEENIE, directed by Tim Burton; AMOUR, directed by Michael Haneke; THE DETAILS, directed by Jacob Aaron Estes; THE GIRL, directed by Julian Jarrold; A LATE QUARTET, directed by Yaron Zilberman; LAY THE FAVORITE, directed by Stephen Frears; RUST & BONE, directed by Jacques Audiard; THE SESSIONS, directed by Ben Lewin; SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, directed by Martin McDonagh; SHADOW DANCER, directed by James Marsh; SMASHED, directed by James Ponsoldt; and WHOLE LOTTA SOLE, directed by Terry George.


Of the 60 World Cinema narratives and documentaries at the 20th Annual Edition, 15 are World Premieres, 3 are North American Premieres, 16 are US Premieres, 18 are East Coast Premieres and 9 are New York Premieres. One of the highlights of this year’s Festival is the “Focus on UK Film” program, co-presented by BAFTA New York and HIFF, in association with BBC AMERICA and THE GREAT Britain Campaign. A slate of 20 British films will be featured during the Festival. Nine programs of short films will include works by Cynthia Wade, Lucy Walker, Don Hertzfeld, and Josh and Benny Safdie, while “Views from Long Island” will feature ten home-grown docs, features, and short films by local filmmakers. Three family-friendly programs, the Hot Docs Presents and the Pitch In projects – VIDAL V. BUCKLEY and DANCING AT JAFFA – are also highlights of the program.


Now in its 13th year, HIFF’s signature sidebar, Films of Conflict & Resolution (C&R), will showcase five films dealing with the realities of war, violence and crucial social issues around the world, including ONE DAY AFTER PEACE, BEYOND RIGHT AND WRONG, CALL ME KUCHU, WAR WITCH, and RISING FROM ASHES, the latter of which is the winner of the Brizzolara Family Foundation Award for a Film of Conflict & Resolution, presented in partnership with REACT to FILM. A screening of T.C. Johnstone’s RISING FROM ASHES, a film about five cyclists who come together to form the first Team Rwanda while racing for spots in the 2012 Olympics, will also kick off a discussion about “Post-War Conflict Zones” on Friday, October 5.


In addition to this C&R panel, HIFF will present a wide array of discussions throughout the five days. Featured “Conversation With” interviews include Richard Gere and Alan Cumming and “An Afternoon with Stevie Nicks” which will precede Dave Stewart’s and Nicks’ documentary, IN YOUR DREAMS: STEVIE NICKS, on Sunday in Sag Harbor. The popular Rowdy Talks, casual morning discussions at Rowdy Hall, will focus on Kickstarter, local Long Island issues and subjects, and an interview with producer and 2012 HIFF juror Rachael Horovitz (MONEYBALL). The Kodak Cinematography Master Class with Robert Elswit (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL) and the Alfred P. Sloan Award Feature Film Panel and Screenplay Readings round out the program of panels and special talks.


For many of these events, members of the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) attending the Festival will serve as mentors, panelists and jurors. “As always, the New York Film Critics Circle is proud to be associated with this festival, one that gathers not only the best movies of the season, but an extremely passionate and discerning crowd,” said this year’s New York Film Critics Circle Chairman Joshua Rothkopf. “It’s a place where real film love happens. Our writers are thrilled to be there.”


The 20th Hamptons International Film Festival is proud to present “Nobel Laureates: In the Camera’s Eye,” film programming in partnership with an exhibition of 40 photographs of Nobel Laureates by Peter Badge at the c/o The Maidstone. Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize-winner and the former President of East Timor, and John Nash, Nobel Prize-winner for Economics, are featured in the exhibition and will attend the Festival and host Q&As of their films, BALIBO and A BEAUTIFUL MIND, respectively.


Also, an exhibition of official HIFF posters from the past twenty years will be shown at the Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton. The kick-off event will take place on September 29th at 5pm. The posters will be on display from the 29th until October 8th. This year’s 2012 poster is designed by renowned British artist Cecily Brown.


As announced earlier, James Shamus is the recipient of the 2012 Industry Toast; Academy Award®-winning costume designer Ann Roth will be feted by colleagues at a special event co-hosted by AMPAS, or the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and Variety will launch the inaugural “Variety ’s 10 To Watch: Breakthrough Performers of 2012.”


Beside the Golden Starfish Awards, the Baume & Mercier Audience Awards, and the Brizzolara Family Foundation Award, presented in partnership with REACT to FILM, HIFF will also present the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize; the Zelda Penzel Giving Voice to the Voiceless Award, the Nussbaum Prize for Provocative Fiction, and Victor Rabinowitz & Joanne Grant Award for Social Justice.

The Friday night Southampton opening is David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. After a court ordered stint at a psychiatric facility, Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper), who is bipolar, moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jackie Weaver) and tries to win back his estranged wife Nikki. Into his orbit flies Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), an equally volatile young widow who offers to help Pat get Nikki back… at a price. The film will be released by The Weinstein Company on November 21st.

David Chase, the creator of THE SOPRANOS, makes his feature film directorial debut with Paramount Vantage’s NOT FADE AWAY, which will close this year’s festival on Sunday, October 7th. The film is about a moment in time in the Sixties when the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band. The film reunites Chase with SOPRANOS star James Gandolfini. Paramount Pictures will release NOT FADE AWAY on December 21st.

To lose his virginity, Mark contacts a professional sex surrogate (the effervescent Helen Hunt) with the help of his therapist and his priest (William H. Macy). SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

WHOLE LOTTA SOLE

BAFTA nominee, Oscar®-winner and Hamptons resident Terry George (HOTEL RWANDA) brings his immense talents to this entertaining comedy of errors set in Belfast. Jimbo Reagan owes local gangster Mad Dog Flynn five thousand dollars, but when he robs a fish market to secure the cash, things go from bad to worse, and he ends up with multiple hostages in a local antique shop currently run by the American cousin (Brendan Fraser) of its proprietor. With amusing turns by Colm Meaney as a cantankerous detective and David O’Hara as Flynn, this delightful comedy is a joy for film fans on both sides of the pond.

THE ALMOST MAN “Mer eller mindre mann”

Thirty-five-year old Henrik and his girlfriend Tone still act like teenagers, pulling pranks and having impromptu dance parties in their new apartment, but the responsibilities of adulthood are finally beginning to loom. When Tone becomes serious about a new career, Henrik pulls in the opposite direction by partying with his hard drinking buddies and playing hooky from his job. Preoccupied by that familiar “Peter Pan” longing for perpetual adolescence, Henrik navigates his state of arrested development in increasingly oddball ways in this fresh and charming Norwegian comedy.

DEAD MAN’S BURDEN

The young woman, Martha, and her husband find a ticket to a better life in San Francisco when they ready the sale of her family’s land to a mining company. With an exacting gasp of the internal and external struggles María must endure, Plá explores the challenges of a timeless issue and society’s conflicted responses to life’s central questions.

From debut director Umut Dag comes the powerful yet quiet family drama KUMA, which explores the relationship between Fatma, a dying woman clinging to old traditions, and her husband’s 19-year-old second wife, Ayse. As their close-knit Turkish family living in Vienna is forced come to terms with this new addition, friendships, jealousy, and hidden passions take unexpected turns. JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET

Jason Becker was a musical prodigy, picking up the guitar at five years old, performing virtuoso solos at sixth grade talent shows, and signing a record deal at 19. With exquisite cinematography by Mike Simpson and music by Dylan Jones, THE TAIWAN OYSTER is a festival find.

Set during the Indonesian offensive in the country in 1975, East originally goes to Ramos-Horta’s homeland to run the country’s news agency, but instead he decides to investigate what happened to five missing Australian journalists who documented the off-shore invasion weeks before.
