Hayground School announced today that construction of its new Integrated Arts & Science Center (IASC) has passed the halfway point, with completion targeted for late November or early December and occupancy expected after the December holiday break. The school also announced that the building’s art studio will be permanently named the “Jon Snow Art Studio” in recognition of Jon Snow’s more than 30 years of service to Hayground.
A Philosophy Built Into the Design
Hayground was founded in 1996 on the premise that all children can live a life of the mind, that social and environmental responsibility are core educational values, and that the arts belong at the center of learning rather than at its periphery. This philosophy shaped the design of the Arts & Science Center, which combines science laboratories, an underground library, and art studios within a single facility built to support Hayground’s hands-on, mentor-based approach for both its school year and summer camp programs.
Naming the Jon Snow Art Studio/Center
Jon Snow, a founding member of Hayground School and its summer camp, has served the school for three decades in roles including faculty chair, admissions oversight, and artist-in-residence, and he founded and led Hayground’s summer camp program. Co-founder Toni Ross has said that without Snow, “there would be no Hayground,” citing his role in shaping the school’s culture and its integration of art, food, and land-based learning. In recognition of this contribution, Hayground will name the building’s art studio the “Jon Snow Art Studio,” a designation acknowledged during a building tour and dedication held on Tuesday. Snow toured the facility last week ahead of the dedication.
Design and Construction Progress
Designed by architect David Berridge, the facility incorporates geothermal heating and cooling, rooftop solar panels, and low-carbon construction materials as part of the school’s commitment to reducing operational and construction-related emissions. The 2,200-square-foot, two-level building includes science laboratories and a library on the ground floor, art studios above, a rooftop teaching garden, and an outdoor amphitheater for performances and gatherings.
Builder John Barrows of P3 Builders and the project team report significant progress on site. Completed work includes the concrete pour for the Science Level walls and floor and the Library, installation of the glue-lam beams, the Art Level floor, the Structurally Insulated Panels, and the Art Center roof, which was constructed with provisions for future solar panels and skylights. The roof over the Library has also been installed, engineered to accommodate a future glass cube at the corner of the building to bring natural light into the library below, and interior carpentry now defines the room dividers and doorways throughout the structure. Additional completed work includes exterior sheathing of the upper level, installation and testing of the building’s septic system, and installation of a portion of the windows on the science and art levels. Installation of conduit for future plumbing and electrical service in the floors and select interior walls is underway, and initial excavation of the amphitheater and its drainage wells is largely complete, with finish work scheduled to begin next week.
