The Longines Hampton Classic 5* Grand Prix will highlight this year’s 49th annual Hampton Classic Horse Show, which returns to Bridgehampton, NY, August 25-September 1. In addition to its sponsorship of the Classic’s culminating event which features a $400,000 purse, Longines, a longtime partner of the Hampton Classic, also returns as the Classic’s Official Timekeeper and sponsor of the $30,000 Longines Rider Challenge.
Each year approximately 50,000 people – including many A-list celebrities – come to watch the nation’s best equestrian athletes compete at the Hampton Classic. Rated USEF ‘Premier-6’ for hunters and jumpers with designated FEI 2* and 5* classes, the Hampton Classic awards more than $1 million in prize money. The Classic features more than 200 competitions in six spectacular show rings, the Agneta Currey Boutique Garden with more than 70 vendors, and a wide selection of dining options, all on its world-class 60-acre showgrounds.
“We are thrilled to continue our more than ten-year partnership with Longines and are proud that we were Longines’ first show jumping partnership in the United States,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the show’s Executive Director. “We greatly appreciate their incredible support over the years, which includes providing accurate timing for our world-class competitions which often come down to just a few hundredths of a second. With them at our side, we look forward to more great events for many years to come.”
From its founding to the present day, Longines has always had a close relationship with the world of horses. It all began in 1869 when Longines produced its first pocket watch with an equestrian motif. Shortly afterward, in 1878, it developed its first chronograph movement mounted in a case engraved with a jockey and his horse. Introduced to North American racecourses in the late 19th century, this type of timepiece proved extremely popular as it allowed performances to be timed to the second. In 1912, a new step was taken when Longines concluded its first official partnership with a show jumping event in Lisbon, Portugal. The Official Top Partner, Official Timekeeper and Official Watch of the FEI since 2013, Longines has been involved with the Hampton Classic since that year.
