The Sag Harbor Partnership has raised $400,000 for the new John Steinbeck Waterfront Park. Sag Harbor Village Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy offered “My sincere thanks to the Sag Harbor Partnership for taking on the arduous task of raising the money for Steinbeck Park. Certainly, we all agree the park can and will be a lovely entrance to our Village. Thanks to the Partnership and the support from the community, we can hopefully start Phase One this fall. We look forward to more donations coming in too as people emerge from the pandemic and hear more about the plans for this lovely park.”
The Village of Sag Harbor and the Sag Harbor Partnership, a 501(c) not-for-profit organization entered a pre-approved grant relationship in support of the John Steinbeck Waterfront Park. All donations are raised by the Sag Harbor Partnership and granted to the Village of Sag Harbor.
Added Susan Mead, the SHP Co-chair, “You can support the continued preservation and activation of the Sag Harbor Village John Steinbeck Waterfront Park with a fully tax-deductible donation. Naming sponsorships are available starting at $1,000 and allow you to commemorate a friend or family member, an organization, special occasion, your business, or to leave your personal mark on our historic Village. We want everyone in the Village to join us now.”
In 2016, the Partnership dedicated their annual Big Tent Party to raise funds for the future John Steinbeck Waterfront Park. Those monies were granted to the Village of Sag Harbor and have been patiently waiting to be utilized for the park development.
A check for $91,607.71 was presented to the Village by the Partnership and two major multi-year gifts totaling $175,000 have been secured to underwrite the Dining Pavilion and the Beachfront preservation. Added to $131,025 raised at a Big Tent Party a few years ago, the Village now has just under $400,000, more than enough to start the project.
The park, designed by world-renowned landscape architect and Sag Harbor Village resident Ed Hollander, will cost close to $2 million in total and take two years to be fully completed.
Molly Bishop the Executive Director of the Sag Harbor Partnership said “we are thrilled with the incredible response so far and hope the summer season will add even more donors for the project putting us in great shape to move forward in the fall and continue until completion. We can’t wait for the new John Steinbeck Waterfront Park to open and for all to enjoy this incredible space for many years to come!”
Ed and Wendy Hollander have, themselves made a generous pledge toward the park development and shared “We are thrilled, as a family, to be able to lend our support to the realization of the John Steinbeck Waterfront Park. Our hope is that it will create a wonderful place for the citizens and visitors to Sag Harbor while providing significant environmental benefits to the Sag Harbor Waterfront.”
