JUST the name THE THREE HENS is very catchy right off the bat…for a foody that is! Irresistibly intrigued by the title we were drawn inside only to discover a warm and welcoming garden habitat rather then farm style decor. The bar instantly makes you feel like you are outside rather then inside with all its greenery so very uplifting – overall the whole space is modern yet casual.
We were promptly ushered over to a clean, white marble table tucked inside a cozy, candlelit booth with a great view of a rather European style apartment building with window boxes across the street making for a really nice cityscape. The Three Hens’ interior is well arranged so one table is not right on top of another for comfortable dinner conversation – not always easy to find in intimate & finite NYC spaces!
We also love the mason jars they used as water glasses for thirsty customers : ) + they added that farm to table feel to the ambiance. New Yorkers are big walkers so it was a very welcome sight indeed after a full day in Manhattan! If you enjoy Cosmopolitans as much I do you’ll find they make a citrus version that is refreshingly light. When it comes to “names” once again it’s another winner for their creative list of signature cocktails – yum ; )
Whitney and I both couldn’t resist the crab cakes with a mint citrus emulsion and organic greens so we didn’t get very original with our appetizers…although the “crispy 5-minute egg” caught our attention – a frisee salad with asparagus, bacon and lardon vinaigrette. For an entree, Whit ordered the Quinoa Vegetable Burger – a special “house blend” with a “Mary Rose Sauce” – ketchup’s match for veggie burgers ; ) plus a pile of homemade sweet potato fries and sliced pickles alongside. I opted for the mouthwatering special of the evening! It was a stuffed loin of pork with goat’s cheese and apples topped with a ginger BLUEBERRY sauce…original and scrumptious. Portion size is definitely leaning towards large so a people bag was a definite…we brought 3 hens home. The Brander Sauvignon Blanc was a lovely match for both our meals and a brand I had never tried but will surely get in the future now that I have had a taste of this light, crisp white wine.
The wholesome American farm style cuisine is thoughtfully prepared by Chef Amarnathik who owner Patty Gallagher brought over to our table for a special introduction…a very nice gesture indeed. It’s always nice to meet the person who labored so lovingly to make YOU a great meal! Our waiter too could not have been friendlier sharing a lot of funny stories of being in The Hamptons himself – so wondering if perhaps he was one of those actors working as waiter til his big break!? A salesman too because he somehow managed to talk us into TWO desserts and bringing one home…YES, we did. Seriously it was impossibly tough to turn down either the chocolate lava cake nor the tiramisu – so we settled upon a delightful Passion Fruit Creme Brulee and left with two delish desserts for another day! SO put thethreehens.com on your new restaurant list + follow them on twitter @Thethreehens for real time announcements from this nice little find in Manhattan.
