The East Hampton Historical Society announces the launch of a new “augmented reality” app at Mulford Farm interpreting the history of the American Revolution in East Hampton. The 1776AR app is free and made possible through the generosity of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. The public is invited to attend the official kick-off event and experience the 1776AR app at Mulford Farm on Sunday, May 26 at 11:30 am.

The immersive 1776AR experience tells the story of the important role played by Colonel David Mulford leading up to the Battle of Long Island in 1776 and the subsequent occupation of the region by the British. After downloading the 1776AR app from the Android or Apple app store, visitors are invited to stroll the Mulford Farmhouse grounds to six locations indicated by engraved stones that serve as QR codes that trigger a new episode of the Mulfords’ Revolutionary War story. Even when the farmhouse is closed, visitors can still access the program.

The May 26th launch event features special guest Hugh King, East Hampton Village and Town Historian, who serves as the virtual tour guide. When users view the app on their cellphone, a 3D model of Hugh appears standing right in front of them. A huge thank you to Hugh for lending his likeness and providing the narration!

Steve Long, Executive Director of the East Hampton Historical Society, says, “As we approach America’s 250th Anniversary in 2026, we are thrilled to have the 1776AR app help foster an understanding of East Hampton’s role in the American Revolution. And after experiencing Mulford Farm, visitors can use the app to visit other historic sites on Long Island that interpret the American Revolution.”

The Mulford Farm tour is part of the Long Island Heritage Trail Experience that uses the power of digital storytelling to engage visitors and make history fresh and relevant to new generations of museum-goers. There are three themes in the series: the American Revolution, Theodore Roosevelt, and African American history. In addition to the East Hampton Historical Society, a dozen other museums and historical societies are participating.

American Revolution 1776AR app: Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Oysterponds Historical Society in Orient, Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay, Three Village Historical Society in Setauket, Ketcham Inn in Center Moriches, Smithtown Historical Society, and Shelter Island Historical Society.

Theodore Roosevelt TRAR app: Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, Theodor Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center in Oyster Bay, Meadowcroft Estate in Sayville, and Montauk Historical Society.

African American History 1502AR app: Southampton African American Museum
