here + there :: The Hamptons’ PR Wire

As Hayground School in Bridgehampton enters its third decade, it is initiating a program of creating a conversation among all our East End schools bout the future of our children and their education. To this end, Hayground has invited author and evolutionary biologist Sam Levin to speak with students, parents and educators from Hayground and other local schools at Hayground School at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 13. A light supper will be served following Levin’s presentation.

Sam Levin was a typical high school student who, like a lot of his friends, spent most of the school day feeling listless and disengaged. One night at the dinner table he complained about school and instead of offering the usual sympathy, his mother, Susan Engel, challenged himEngel, a developmental psychologist and Williams College professor, whose kids had all gone to public high school in western Massachusetts, knew that kids are most engaged when they’re doing activities that they’ve chosen. So she said, “Why don’t you start your own school?” And astonishingly, he did!

The extraordinary national and international response to this first student-run school- within- a-school led Levin and his mother, to write a book about this experience, A School of Our Own [The New Press, 2016]. As Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education said about this book, “In both form and content, unlike anything that I’ve ever read. The educational experiences it describes are unique.” Susan Engel grew up in Sagaponack, went to both local public schools and the Hampton Day School. Levin spent all his summers on the family farm in Sagaponack.

Sam Levin is a fresh new voice. His appearance is an extraordinary opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to hear how the vision of one young person with determination and grit significantly changed the way students in this Independent Project at his school learn. Levin is a graduate of Oxford University, where he is currently pursuing a doctorate in zoology.
