Blazing Trails

by Mike Bottini

Environmental Planner

The Camp Hero area at Montauk Point has the potential for an excellent trail system, which would: 1) showcase the outstanding forest groves of beech, holly, red maple, black birch, shadbush, witchhazel, tupelo and oak; 2) offer spectacular ocean views from the bluff; and 3) provide pedestrian access to the beach.

The trail system would traverse Old Montauk Road (an important access for surfers, bird watchers and other nature enthusiasts, hikers, beachcombers, fishermen, photographers and artists), the lighthouse and concession area, the seal haulout site, Money Pond, Oyster Pond, and linkages west to the trails in Montauk County Park.

The Paumanok Path would be included in the trail system. In fact, this section of trail would provide hikers on the 100-mile long Paumanok Path with their only view of the Atlantic Ocean.
