In Memory of Austin Kaminow

When lung cancer claimed the life of Austin Kaminow this summer, we at the Group for the South Fork lost one of our most dedicated, versatile and good-humored friends. Austin was part of the GSF team for more than a decade. He led bicycle tours, answered our phones at the front desk, performed many administrative duties and - with his wife Tina - worked behind the silent auction tables at our summer benefit. His generosity wasn't limited to the Group for the South Fork. For example, he was a regular participant in Ellen.s Run to help the cause of breast cancer awareness. He was also a supporter of LIVESTRONG "The Lance Armstrong Foundation" and wore a LIVESTRONG band around his wrist.

Austin was such a generous and magnanimous person that I.m sure we only knew a small fraction of his good works. However, I can say this: Austin showed us all by example how to get the most out of life through good friends, family, empathy, conversation, jokes, travel, cultural events, volunteerism and exercise. In fact, my fondest memories of Austin consist of him leaving me in the dust on bike riding tours on the South Fork - despite the fact that he was about 30 years my senior. For that reason, when he led bike outings, I would always be "the sweep" - ostensibly because I was making sure no one on our tours was left behind, but truthfully because there was no possible way that I could keep up with him! One of Austin's great passions (besides entertaining his extended family with Tina in their Northside Hills home) was organizing and participating in scenic North American bike tours.

We miss you, Austin, and still can't believe that you won't be stopping by the office anymore to check in on us and tell us of your latest adventures. You.re in our hearts forever and a day.
