Based on recent extrapolations of The 1996 Suffolk County Farmland Report and individual towns' planning documents

Our goal is to protect 80% of farmland at risk in Riverhead and Southold, 90% of farmland at risk in Southampton and East Hampton, and 75% of farmland at risk on Shelter Island.Additional investment secures the previous investment. We've done a lot. If we don't do the rest, we've squandered our original investment.

How MUCH will it COST?

  • The total for purchase of farmland development rights is $230 million

  • The total for open space is $145 million

  • GRAND TOTAL is $375 million

Current real estate sales in our region for open space and farmland development rights suggest that $375 million can accomplish the land protection that we must initiate.

Where the FUNDS to Buy the Land will Come from:

In order to realize the objective of land conservation as aforementioned, the following open space funding sources must be secured and committed over the next seven to nine years:

  • New York Environmental Protection Fund and Clean Water Bond Act: $100 million
  • Community Preservation Fund (2% real estate transfer tax): $100 million
  • Federal Open Space and Agricultural Preservation Programs: $100 million
  • Town Governments (already committed): $17 million
  • County of Suffolk (25% is committed): $60 million
  • Total Project: $377 million*

Note: With the exception of the town governments, the above funding sources have been proposed, but not yet committed. In the event that these sources do not materialize, adjustments will need to be made and new funding sources found.

* A $2 million buffer is included in this estimate.
