A tired businessman meets a fellow traveler (played by director Alex Cox) in the cavernous dining room of a deserted Liverpool hotel and they embark on a nocturnal and increasingly surreal tour of the city in search of food. They find a third wanderer and continue their journey until its unforgettable (and puzzling) epiphany. This provocative and mischievous movie, the first film made by Cox and partner Tod Davies' Exterminating Angel Productions, features witty performances, lucid hand-held photography by Rob Tregenza and sly sound design by Richard Beggs. Cox continues to explore displacement and the subtle dangers of globalization filtered through his trademark irony and tweaked here by a startling geographical twist. He also proves that he's got a promising future as a character actor. - Eddie Cockrell
