Producer: Institute for the intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults A poor boy in Teheran loses his sister's only pair of shoes and rather than telling their father, they go on a clandestine jour-ney through the city to somehow find a new pair. A heartfelt, beautifully acted drama, The Children of Heaven is also a provocative critique of capitalism and unfair economic condi-tions in modern-day Iran. As with many of the best Iranian films of recent years, The Children of Heaven is grounded in the most specific earthly details (in this case, the slow linger-ing shots of feet and shoes, which reveal so much about social status) but also manages to tell a deeply resonant and universal story. This is one of the most heartwarming and accessible feature films from Iran since The White Balloon. -David Schwartz |
