"Drylongso" is an old African-American slang word meaning 11 ordinary," or "just the same old thing." To Cauleen Smith, it means creating an authentic style more like real life than typical 'hood movies as she depicts the everyday struggles of a young black woman. Filmed on a shoestring in West Oakland, Drylongso follows a determined photography student, Pica, who uses a Polaroid camera to document the existence of young black men, convinced that they are an endangered species. Pica befriends Tobi, a lonely, relatively affluent woman running from an abusive boyfriend. While the storyline may sound melodramatic, Smith's style isn't. She works like a street photographer, a quiet observer capturing the rhythms and atmosphere of the neighborhood, and willing to let the random eccentric character stray into her delicate, heartfelt movie. -David Schwartz
