Sent to Iceland with strict orders from his grandfather (cult director Seijun Suzuki) to perform a sacred memorial service for his dead par-ents, Japanese fish company salaryman Atsushi Hirata (rock star Masatoshi Nagase, from Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train) encounters all manner of strange and wonderful things on his trek, including spectacular scenery, exploding icebergs, helpful ghosts, bickering Americans, the legendary Cowboy of the North, and the local cuisine (featuring sheep's head, fermented shark and the national drink, mod-estly called "Black Death"). "Does Anybody Know You Are Going This Way?" reads one ominous road sign, but by the time Atsushi's gotten that far you'll be under the whacked-out spell of this deadpan delight. - Eddie CockreH
