Producer/Editor: Alexa-Frances Shaw Stan Brakhage once described his films as "the recorded visual music of my inner and exterior life, the filmic memory of my living." Although Brakhage may be unknown to the general public, he is a hero of the avant-garde, making more than 300 films which use an astonishing variety of techniques to reinvent the medium. His art and life, which are inseparable, form the subject of this thoughtful and inspiring portrait. Past and present interviews with the always - loquacious Brakhage, his friends, family, and colleagues are combined with excerpts from his vast body of work. The film, which is enhanced by James Tenney's modernist piano score, is a perfect introduction to the work of this great artist. A selection of Brakhage films, chosen by filmmaker Phil Solomon, follows the screening. - David Schwartz |
