Matthew Diamond USA, 1998, 98 mins
Producers: Jerry Kupfer, Matthew Diamond Paul Taylor, the lanky disciple of Martha Graham who went on to become one of the greatest choreographers of the past forty years, is the subject of Matthew Diamond's revelatory documentary Dancemaker. Taking us inside the rehearsal process, Dancemaker shows the bearlike Taylor, playful but demanding, as he works with his company to create new pieces. Diamond was himself a dancer and choreographer before becoming a director, which partly explains why he has been able to create such a lucid and candid insider's portrait of a great choreographer at work. Precious archival footage of Taylor as a young dancer, present-day performances filmed from backstage, and scenes of the company during a recent tour to India, combine to give us one of the finest of all films about modern dance. - David Schwartz |
