USA/Ethiopia 1996, 16mm, Color and B&W, 1 17 min.
Director: Yemane I. Demissie Yoseph (Jima Assefa), an aristocrat-turned-revolutionary, secretly masterminds a coup d'etat against the Ethiopian monarchy. When the coup fails, Yoseph finds himself a fugitive. During his desperate flight into the countryside, his last hope is Dejen (Eskinder Berhanu), a servant who was once his childhood playmate. But Yoseph and Dejen soon discover that old class prejudices and resentments cannot be overcome so easily. Set in Ethiopia, but shot entirely in southern California, Yemane Demissie's feature debut is a fast moving, taut political thriller based on the real-life attempt by imperial guards to overthrow Haile Selassie in 1960. The coup was a turning point in the history of Ethiopia and a forerunner of the Revolution of 1974/75 in which Selassie was deposed. "Tumult not only presents a side of that country that's been lost to history-a once-powerful ruling class oblivious to the poor but in the process, the fiction answers a lot of questions about Ethiopia's current painful reality."
