Ari (Tommy Michaels) is accident prone. He runs headlong into poles or falls flat on his face. Together with his sexstarved school pals, the Strong Island Boys, Ari reluctantly cruises the streets of his affluent Long Island neighborhood, looking for love. Instead they encounter a group of masked thugs on a Halloween-night rampage, and Ari is seriously beaten. Plotting their revenge, the scrawny Strong Island Boys begin to take illegal steroids in an attempt to bulk up. Sex and betrayal follow the laughs in this semi-autobiographical exploration of violence (in 1993, director Mark Schiffer was savagely beaten by a group of drunken high school football players, requiring months of re-constructive surgery) in a seemingly idyllic suburban community. Strong Island Boys is a powerful debut feature whose young teenage protagonist struggles to grow up with his dignity and integrity intact.
