Director: Evan Brenner Set in a small town in Russia, Sasha lives with his father, a man at once caring and cruel, who is frustrated by his failings as a single parent. Frequently hungry and obviously unhappy, Sasha is offered the opportunity to move to a state orphanage by the benevolent principal of his school. With his father's resigned approval, Sasha is consigned to the State. Well fed and comfortable, he seems to thrive at the orphanage. But Sasha's past continues to trouble him; he's never come to terms with his mother's absence, which has been shrouded in secrecy. Two school bullies steal a confidential file and confront Sasha with the truth about his mother's death. He breaks down and accepts the full weight of his loss. In the Spring, however, Sasha returns home to see his ailing father and to rekindle his friendship with a young girl named Natasha. Shot in Russia by American film maker Evan Brenner, Sasha's Riddle is a both a tender coming-of-age story and a charming allegory for the recent political and cultural upheaval in Russia. |
