Seventeen-year-old Artemesia (Valentine Cervi), the
beautiful daughter of well-known painter Orazio Gentileschi (Michel
Serrault), is refused admission to the Academy of Fine Arts because she is a
female, and is forbidden to work from nude male models. Nevertheless, Orazio
recognizes that his daughter's talent exceeds his own, and becomes
determined to encourage her. When renowned artist Agostino Tassi (Miki
Manojlovic) comes to collaborate with Orazio on a series of religious
frescoes, Artemesia is astonished by his arrogance and profligate lifestyle,
and he by her youth, beauty and talent. At her father's behest, Agostino
reluctantly agrees to teach Artemisia the latest innovation in painting:
perspective. But little by little the relationship between teacher and
student takes on another form. Set in Italy during the early seventeenth
century, Agnes Merlet's staggeringly beautiful new film features ravishing
sets and costumes, and wonderfully passionate performances from its cast.
