USA 1997, 16mm, Color, 87 min. World Premiere
Director: Roger Nygard For 30 years the adventures of Spock, Kirk, the U.S. Enterprise, and the subsequent crews, have been watched by millions of fans at least once a day somewhere in the world. But what clearly sets this show apart is the fan phenomenon it has created, a group of devotees who have come to be known as 'Trekkies" or "Trekkers". Denise Crosby, star of TV's "Next Generation," leads the viewer on a journey, giving an overview of this multi-faceted phenomenon: the conventions, costumes, the fan clubs, and fanzines. And, of course, we meet the fans, such as Barbara Adams, who showed up for jury duty on the Little Rock, Arkansas, Whitewater trial wearing her Starfleet Commanding Officer's uniform; Dr. Denis Bourgulgnon, a dentist in Orlando, Florida, whose office has a Star Trek theme; and Daryl Frazetti, whose cat, " Bones, " wears Dr. McCoy uniforms. Roger Nygard's Trekkies is an often hilarious, always fascinating look at the largest fan phenomenon in pop culture history. |
