Opening Night GalaEdges of the LordUnited States, 2001, 98 mins. Director/Screenwriter:: Yurek Bogayovicz Executive Producers: Boaz Davidson, Danny Dimbort Producers: Zev Braun, Philip Krupp, Avi Lerner Original Music: ]an A.P. Kaczmarek Cast: Haley Joel Osment, Willem Dafoe, Liam Hess, Richard Barrel The games children play, the stories they make up, and the things they do to each other are anything but innocent. They are attempts to make sense of a world that can be beautiful and baffling. Edges of the Lord, set in on idyllic country village in Poland in 1943, is a deceptively picturesque fable of good and evil that views the horrors of the time through the prism of a touching and multi-layered coming-of-age story. In a compelling performance filmed just prior to A.I., Haley Joel Osment is Ramek, a twelve-year-old Jewish boy from Krakow hiding out with a rural Catholic family. Ramek soon finds himself in a fragile position with the children of the village, who don't know whether to view the newcomer as a friend or a rival. In a catechism class taught by the local priest (Willem Dafoe), Ramek meets Maria, a precocious thirteen-year-old whose romantic interest sparks some of the film's surprising twists and turns. A tale of betrayal, murder, and revenge with religious overtones unfolds against a lush, pastoral backdrop. Like Rene Clement's classic French film, Forbidden Games, the poetic Edges of the Lord finds universal truths by exploring the many contradictions of childhood. It has the combination of light and dark, cruelty and sweetness, magic and realism, found in a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. - David Schwartz Polish born Yurek Bogayevicz is an acclaimed theater director whose Production of Brecht's Arturo Ui won the Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle Award. His films include ANNA, starring Sally Kirkland in an Oscar-nominated role, and THREE OF HEARTS starring Billy Baldwin and Kelly Lynch. His next film, EXIT IN RED, stars Mickey Rourke.
Closing Night Gala
Enigma In the spring of 1943, British codebreakers at the Bletchley Park compound north of London were astounded to learn that German navy officials had changed the transmission codes broadcast via Enigma cipher machines, thus leaving more than a hundred Allied ships in three separate Atlantic convoys vulnerable to attack by enemy U-Boats. And so they once again summon brilliant mathematician Tom Jericho (Dougray Scott) to assist with the codebreaking effort - although he's still suffering from a nervous breakdown over his dashed relationship with co-worker Claire (Saffron Burrows). But Claire has disappeared mysteriously, and with the help of her flatmate, Hester (Kate Winslet), Tom must solve this mystery ahead of British Intelligence agent Wigrom (Jeremy Northam). ENIGMA is that rare thing in current commercial cinema - intelligent entertainment sumptuously mounted. Veteran director Michael Apted makes the most of Tom Stoppord's shrewd adaptation of the Robert Harris novel, creating a thriller as elegant as it is involving. - Eddie Cockrell Michael Apted was born in Aylesbury, England in 1941.
