Lillian's Story

Directed by Jerzy Domaradzki

Jerry Domaradzki's moving film Lillian's Story reveals the life of a woman whose true independence has pushed her to the edges of society.

For forty years Lillian was locked up in an asylum by her cruel, abusive father. Finally released, Lillian begins to search for the love she has been longing for. Miraculously she is reunited with Frank, the love of her youth, now an alcoholic. In the asylum, the plays of Shakespeare were Lillian's refuge, and outside they become the way she supports herself and Frank, reciting soliloquies for small change. One day, Jewel, a fellow former "loony" appears, pregnant and believing the baby is the son of God. The three outsiders now form a strange but supportive family. When this family suddenly dissolves, Lillian must confront the demons of her past, and she does so unflinchingly.

Ruth Cracknell gives a bravura performance as the resilient, poetic Lillian. Lillian's Story is delicately comic, poignant and full of insight about the precious commodity we call love.
