The Hampton Classic Horse Show has announced that Johnathan Hallgrey, a native New Yorker, has been selected as its 2015 poster artist. The posters are highly sought-after souvenirs from the show which sell quickly, many of which have become collector’s items.

The Hampton Classic returns to Bridgehampton, NY, August 23-30, for its 40th year of world-class equestrian competition. The Classic is the culminating event of the famed Hamptons’ summer season on Long Island, and many A-list celebrities can be spotted enjoying this prestigious show from the sidelines.

The selected artwork, “The Three Hunters”, is an oil pastel done on paper that Hallgrey created in 1987. The image was also used for the self-published book cover of the beloved Sir Thomas Tattletales Equestrian Counting book.

“It’s a great honor and privilege to have been chosen to join the ranks of outstanding equestrian art representing The Hampton Classic Horse Show,” said Hallgrey, who is an equestrian himself and rides both English and Western styles of riding. “I remember admiring one of the posters as a child while visiting my aunt in New Haven. I thought it was just magnificent!”

A self-trained artist, Hallgrey traveled throughout Europe in the 1980’s admiring the great art and architecture. Upon his return to New York City, he worked for the Museum of Modern Art in books and posters. Being surrounded by art was the catalyst he needed to create images that are reminiscent of people and places he enjoyed reading about as a child and abroad. In his work one can also see the influences of the New York Jazz age, the luster of great Broadway shows and Hollywood film magic. Hallgrey has a compilation of equestrian drawings which reference Hunters, Polo, Jockeys and even a Zebra.

“I was inspired by the graceful stillness of the equine and the exquisite equestrian attire of dressage and hunt fashions,” described Hallgrey. “My equestrian style paintings were inspired by the ancient art of the Egyptians and Etruscans combined with a Modern French Art Deco theme.”

Hallgrey’s works of art are not only sought-after from New Yorkers, but also celebrities, elite families and international companies. His pieces have been acquired by Hugh Jackman, Toni Braxton, Christopher Lloyd, William Hurt, Barry Bostwick, Elisabeth von Trapp, Sarah Ferguson, HRH Princess Chantal of France and Baron Francoise de Sambucy. His artwork graces the walls of Rockefeller Center, Morell Wine Bar and Café, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. Pictures and Universal Studios to name a few.

The Hampton Classic features more than 100 classes of competition for horses and riders of all ages. A wide range of jumper, hunter, equitation, short stirrup and leadline classes are part of the Classic’s schedule, as well as competitions for riders with disabilities.

The Classic features 6 show rings, a Boutique Garden with more than 70 vendors, and a wide selection of dining options, all on its 60-acre show grounds. The Classic’s world-class equestrian competition attracts many of the nation’s top professional and amateur riders, and its Hamptons charm and schedule of family attractions make it the perfect destination for anybody looking to add some style to their summer.
